How to Get a UAE Golden Visa in 2025: Requirements, Routes and Step-by-Step Guide

Date:

The UAE Golden Visa is a long-term residency programme that allows eligible individuals — investors, entrepreneurs, professionals, and exceptional talents — to reside in the UAE for 10 years, renewable, without the need for an employer sponsorship. Since its expanded launch in 2022, the Golden Visa has become one of the most sought-after residency programmes globally, attracting high-net-worth individuals, technology professionals, and internationally mobile talent to the UAE.

Who Qualifies for the Golden Visa?

Investors: Individuals who invest a minimum of AED 2 million (approximately $545,000) in UAE real estate are eligible. This can include off-plan properties from approved developers with a payment plan confirmation. Alternatively, investors with AED 2 million deposited in an approved UAE bank or invested in an approved UAE fund also qualify.

Entrepreneurs: Founders of startups registered in the UAE with a project valued at no less than AED 500,000, or individuals who have received approval from an approved business incubator, may qualify under the entrepreneur route.

Professionals: Professionals in strategic specialities — including doctors, engineers, scientists, artists, and athletes — can qualify. Doctors and engineers working in the UAE and holding a licence from a UAE professional body are eligible. The specific list of qualifying specialities is published by the UAE Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP).

Outstanding Students: Students who graduate from UAE universities with a minimum GPA of 3.75, or who are accepted to one of the world’s top 100 universities, may qualify under this category.

The Application Process

Applications for the UAE Golden Visa are processed through the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP). The steps are: (1) Verify eligibility based on your qualifying category; (2) Prepare required documents (passport, relevant financial or professional credentials, no-objection letters where needed); (3) Submit application through the ICP portal (icp.gov.ae) or in person at an ICP Customer Happiness Centre; (4) Complete medical fitness test and biometrics; (5) Receive the Golden Visa Emirates ID and residency stamp.

Processing times vary, but most straightforward applications are resolved within 2-4 weeks. Using a licensed UAE immigration services provider can simplify document preparation and follow-up, particularly for those who are not UAE residents and are applying from abroad. Family members — spouse, children, and in some categories parents — can be sponsored under the primary Golden Visa holder’s residency.

Key Benefits

The Golden Visa’s most significant benefit is independence: holders are not tied to an employer, can start businesses freely, and can exit and re-enter the UAE without jeopardising their residency status. The UAE’s zero personal income tax, world-class infrastructure, central location for global travel, and high quality of life make the Golden Visa a compelling long-term residential proposition for high-achievers globally.
