Doha has been designated the GCC Tourism Capital for 2026, following a unanimous decision by the region’s tourism ministers. The recognition reflects Qatar’s remarkable transformation over the past decade from a niche business travel destination into a fully-fledged international leisure and cultural hub — a transformation accelerated by hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup and sustained by a strategic post-tournament tourism investment programme.
Qatar welcomed 1.13 million tourists in Q1 2026, building on the 5.1 million international visitors recorded across the full year 2025. The Q1 figure suggests the country is on track for another record year, with occupancy across the country’s 42,000-plus hotel keys surpassing 70 per cent — the highest market-wide rate in more than six years.
What Makes Doha Unmissable in 2026
Qatar’s appeal as a visitor destination rests on a combination of genuine world-class cultural infrastructure, warm hospitality, compact city layout and the accessibility that comes from Qatar Airways’ position as one of the world’s top five airlines serving every major global hub.
The Museum of Islamic Art — designed by I.M. Pei and holding one of the most significant collections of Islamic art, science and decorative objects in the world — remains the cultural centrepiece of any Doha itinerary. The National Museum of Qatar, designed in the form of a desert rose, opened in 2019 and has since become one of the Gulf’s most photographed architectural landmarks alongside its extraordinary exhibition programme.
The Msheireb Downtown Doha — the world’s first sustainable downtown regeneration project — has created a pedestrian-friendly cultural and dining district in the historic heart of the city, while the Katara Cultural Village continues to host an extraordinary calendar of art, theatre, film and music events that draw regional and international audiences year-round.
New for 2026: Dadu Children’s Museum
A major new family attraction — the Dadu Children’s Museum of Qatar — is set to open in Doha in 2026, adding a world-class interactive education and play destination to the city’s already impressive cultural infrastructure. Designed to engage children aged 3 to 12 with science, art, storytelling and nature through hands-on experiences, Dadu is expected to become one of the region’s leading family attractions and a significant driver of family tourism from the wider GCC.
Lusail: Qatar’s City of the Future
North of Doha, the planned city of Lusail continues to develop as one of the Arab world’s most ambitious urban projects. The iconic 88,966-seat Lusail Stadium — which hosted the 2022 World Cup Final — anchors a broader development that includes the Lusail Marina, luxury waterfront dining, retail and entertainment, and some of Qatar’s newest hotel openings. World-class events are scheduled at Lusail through 2026 and beyond, ensuring the stadium continues to generate visitor footfall well beyond its original tournament purpose.
The Souq Waqif Experience
No visit to Doha is complete without time in Souq Waqif, the beautifully restored historic market district that offers the most authentic traditional Gulf experience in the country. From spice merchants and falconry supply shops to some of Doha’s finest traditional restaurants serving slow-cooked Qatari cuisine, the souq is simultaneously a living neighbourhood and a world-class heritage visitor experience.
Visa-Free Entry for Hundreds of Nationalities
Qatar offers visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry to citizens of more than 100 countries, making it one of the most accessible Gulf destinations for spontaneous travel. Hamad International Airport — consistently rated among the world’s top three airports — processes arrivals efficiently, and the journey from arrival at the gate to the front door of a Doha hotel can take under 45 minutes. For GCC nationals, entry is frictionless with a national ID.
As GCC Tourism Capital 2026, Doha has the official recognition to match the substance of what it offers. For first-time visitors and returning regulars alike, this is the year the Qatari capital earns its place on the global must-visit list.
