Dubai nol Card Refund: Cash vs Transfer Cost

Date:

As of 1 October 2026: refunding a nol card’s remaining balance in cash costs 2.5% of the amount or AED 5, whichever is higher, while transferring that same balance to another nol card costs nothing at all, read directly from RTA’s own service page. For anyone leaving Dubai with unused credit on their card, that one choice between cash and transfer is the difference between losing a small cut of the balance and keeping all of it.

When can I actually ask for a Dubai nol card refund?

RTA covers two distinct situations under this one service: refunding the remaining or non-activated balance on a card that is lost, stolen, damaged, faulty, or expired, or that the holder simply wants to cancel, and refunding an overcharge caused by a cancelled itinerary, a failed check-out, swiping the card twice, or being charged a higher fare than the trip actually cost. RTA splits the refund type into four categories: Personal nol Card Balance, Registered nol Card Balance, Anonymous nol Card Balance, and Overcharge Claim Refund.

What happens to a card if it fails mid-trip?

RTA’s terms specifically address the case of a card becoming faulty partway through a journey: the trip is completed without charging any further fees. The refund then applies to whatever balance was left on the card when it failed, not to the trip itself. Separately, if the card is damaged, lost, or expired and a replacement is needed rather than just a refund, the holder bears the cost of issuing that replacement card, which is a different fee from the refund service covered here.

How much does a cash refund actually cost?

RTA charges 2.5% of the refunded amount or a flat AED 5, whichever works out higher. On a small remaining balance, that effectively means paying AED 5 regardless of how little is left on the card; the percentage only starts costing more once the balance crosses roughly AED 200. Transferring the same balance onto another nol card, by contrast, carries no fee at all.

What does the actual refund process involve?

The steps run through RTA’s website: log in with UAE PASS or an RTA account, select Refund on the dashboard, choose Refund Type and then Refund nol Card Balance, enter the card’s Tag ID, select the reason for the refund, choose cash or balance transfer and enter a PIN code, then confirm and submit. Submitting the application immediately creates a card-blocking request, since the original card can no longer be used once a refund is in motion.

How long does it actually take to get the money?

RTA states 4 working days from the application date before the refund is approved. Once approved, an SMS confirmation arrives, and that Tag ID or SMS needs to be shown to Metro station staff to actually collect a cash refund, or the alternative card needs to be tapped on any online RTA device, the nol Pay app, parking machines, solar machines, or a Metro gate, to activate a transferred balance.

What do I need before starting?

RTA lists just two requirements: the nol card’s Tag ID, and, specifically for a balance transfer, a second registered or personal nol card to receive the funds. An anonymous card being refunded in cash does not need a second card at all.

How does this connect to using nol day to day?

Our Dubai Metro and Nol card guide covers how to get a card in the first place, the different card types, and what happens if one is simply lost rather than being refunded. Anyone who already decided not to keep using Dubai’s public transport, for example after switching to the Dubai Bus on Demand shuttle service or a personal vehicle, should weigh the AED 5-or-2.5% cash fee against simply transferring the leftover balance to a card they will keep using. For anyone keeping a car registered in Dubai instead, our Dubai plate number transfer guide covers the separate RTA process and fee for moving a plate’s ownership.

What is the short version?

A Dubai nol card refund costs 2.5% of the balance or AED 5, whichever is higher, if taken as cash, but nothing at all if transferred to another nol card. Approval takes 4 working days after applying through RTA’s website with the card’s Tag ID, and the service also covers overcharge claims from cancelled trips, failed check-outs, or double swipes, not just lost or expired cards.
