Qatar Vehicle Registration: The QR 100 Fee

Date:

As of 1 October 2026: registering a new vehicle in Qatar costs a flat QR 100, and transferring ownership of one costs the same QR 100, read directly from Hukoomi, Qatar’s own government services portal. Renewal fees, by contrast, vary by vehicle category rather than following one flat figure.

How much does Qatar vehicle registration actually cost?

The Ministry of Interior charges a QR 100 registration fee for both new and used vehicles being registered for the first time, with an additional optional fee if the owner wants to customise the plate number. Residents who are not government employees need a signed letter from their sponsor or company, and only the technical inspection step requires showing up in person, everything else can be handled online or by paper form at the Traffic Department.

What does transferring ownership actually cost?

Transferring a vehicle to a new owner, whether a person or a company, carries the same QR 100 fee. The process needs the original vehicle registration, copies of ID from both the seller and buyer, and an insurance document under the buyer’s name. Mortgaged vehicles need approval from the mortgagee first, and vehicles sold through a licensed car agency go through a slightly different paperwork chain involving the agency’s own seal and authorization card.

What about renewing an existing registration?

This is where Qatar’s system genuinely differs from a flat fee: MOI’s registration renewal fees vary by vehicle type rather than following one number, and Hukoomi itself directs anyone needing the exact figure for their specific vehicle category to the Ministry of Interior’s own fee schedule. What is confirmed is that choosing to receive the new registration card by mail through Qatar Post rather than collecting it in person adds QR 20 to whatever the base renewal fee comes to.

What triggers the technical inspection requirement?

A vehicle manufactured three years or more before the current date must pass a technical inspection through WOQOD’s FAHES stations before its registration can be renewed. Newer vehicles are exempt from this step. The inspection, along with valid insurance, both have to be in order before MOI will process the renewal, and it is the one part of the whole process that cannot be completed remotely.

What documents does a renewal actually need beyond the inspection?

Hukoomi’s offline instructions list the original vehicle registration, proof of a successful FAHES inspection where applicable, and proof of car insurance valid for at least one year, or longer for a newer vehicle. The registration itself has to have already expired before a renewal application can be submitted, it is not something that can be done early as a precaution.

Can any of this be done without visiting an office?

All three services, new registration, ownership transfer, and renewal, can be completed through MOI’s e-services portal using a Qatari smart card, or through the Metrash mobile app, with only the technical inspection itself needing in-person attendance. Paper-based offline applications remain available at MOI’s Traffic Department for anyone who prefers that route.

How does this compare with the rest of driving in Qatar?

Owning a car in Qatar also means getting and renewing a driving licence, a separate process our Qatar driving licence conversion guide covers in full, including which foreign licences qualify for a straight exchange. And for anyone weighing whether to buy property alongside a car as part of settling in Qatar long-term, our Qatar real estate guide covers foreign ownership rules in areas like The Pearl and Lusail City.

How does Qatar’s flat fee compare with the UAE’s percentage-based system?

Qatar’s QR 100 flat fee for both registration and transfer is a markedly simpler structure than the percentage-based transfer fees used elsewhere in the Gulf for vehicle or property transactions. Our UAE traffic fines and Salik guide covers the broader cost of owning and driving a car across the UAE, a useful point of comparison for anyone relocating between the two countries.

What is the short version?

Registering a new vehicle in Qatar costs QR 100, transferring ownership costs the same QR 100, and renewal fees vary by vehicle type with MOI’s own schedule as the authoritative source for the exact figure. Vehicles three years or older need a FAHES technical inspection before renewal, mail delivery of a new registration card adds QR 20, and everything except the inspection itself can be done online through MOI’s portal or the Metrash app.
