For most of the last decade the Saadiyat Cultural District was a rendering. Louvre Abu Dhabi opened and then, for years, very little followed. That changed abruptly: between April 2025 and December 2025 three major institutions opened, and a fourth arrives in December 2026. Here is what is actually open, and what is in each.

Louvre Abu Dhabi is open from 10am to midnight, with galleries and exhibitions closing at 6.30pm Tuesday to Thursday and 8.30pm on Friday and Saturday. It is closed on Mondays. The museum opened in 2017 to a design by Jean Nouvel.
Zayed National Museum
The national museum opened to the public on 3 December 2025. It was designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning architect Lord Norman Foster of Foster + Partners, and holds six permanent galleries with more than 1,500 objects, one temporary exhibition space, and an outdoor gallery — Al Masar Garden — spanning 600 metres.
Its archaeological collection covers 300,000 years of human habitation in what is now the UAE, which is the point of it: the museum exists to argue that the country’s history did not begin with oil.
Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi
Opened 22 November 2025, designed by the Dutch practice Mecanoo across 35,000 square metres. Three objects do most of the work of drawing people in.
The first is “Stan”, a nearly complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton. The second is a 25-metre female blue whale specimen. The third is the least visually dramatic and the most extraordinary: the Murchison Meteorite, which contains grains formed roughly seven billion years ago — before our solar system existed.
teamLab Phenomena
The one that is hardest to describe and easiest to enjoy. teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi opened on 18 April 2025 across 17,000 square metres, operated by Miral Experiences and designed by teamLab Architects with the Abu Dhabi practice MZ Architects. It is listed by teamLab as a permanent venue.
It is an immersive digital art space rather than a museum of objects — closer to walking inside an artwork than looking at one. One practical note: teamLab’s own site carries a “Closed Artworks” notice, so individual installations may be unavailable on any given day. Check before travelling for something specific.
Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, opening December 2026
The Department of Culture and Tourism announced on 28 July 2026 that Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will open on 11 December 2026. It is designed by Frank Gehry, the late Pritzker laureate, and has 30 galleries unfolding across the interior around a central atrium, with 11,600 square metres of interior gallery space and 23,000 square metres of outdoor exhibition areas.
It joins what the Guggenheim Foundation calls its constellation of museums in New York, Venice and Bilbao. Given the years of delay, the sensible advice is to plan around the announced date rather than assume it.
How to think about the district
Two honest observations. First, the concentration is unusual: a national museum, an encyclopaedic art museum, a natural history museum and a digital art venue within walking distance is a density few cities have, and it happened in roughly twelve months.
Second, the district is a work in progress rather than a finished thing, and with Guggenheim still to come it would be wrong to describe it as complete. Anyone planning a visit should treat it as one long day or, better, two half-days — the Natural History Museum and Zayed National Museum reward time, and Louvre Abu Dhabi’s late closing makes it the natural evening stop.
