The UAE’s 10-year Golden Visa residency programme has expanded its eligibility criteria significantly in 2026, adding several new categories of applicants that reflect the country’s evolving vision of the talent and investment profiles it wants to attract and retain. Content creators, professional gamers, nurses, superyacht owners, humanitarian trailblazers, researchers, and athletes are among the newly eligible groups, joining the existing categories that have covered investors, entrepreneurs, exceptional students, and professionals in specialised fields since the programme’s introduction in 2019.
The expansion signals a deliberate broadening of the Golden Visa’s scope beyond the traditional wealth and investment criteria that defined its early years. By including roles in healthcare, digital content, sports, and research, the UAE is positioning the programme as a talent magnet for a wider range of high-value contributors — not just high-net-worth individuals or executives of large corporations.
Key New Categories Explained
Content creators and social media influencers with significant followings and a verifiable commercial track record can now apply, recognising the UAE’s position as a global hub for digital media production and the economic activity that large creator audiences generate. Professional gamers — competitive esports players with national or international rankings — reflect the UAE’s growing investment in the gaming and esports industry, with Dubai hosting several major esports tournaments annually. Nurses are now eligible in recognition of the critical role that qualified healthcare professionals play in a rapidly growing population, addressing a persistent recruitment and retention challenge in the UAE’s expanding hospital network. Athletes who represent the UAE nationally or who are professional competitors in recognised sports codes are also covered under the expanded criteria.
Family Sponsorship and Practical Benefits
Golden Visa holders benefit from simplified family sponsorship arrangements, allowing them to sponsor spouses, children, and in some cases domestic staff without the standard salary and accommodation requirements that apply to residents on standard employment visas. The 10-year validity of the visa also eliminates the renewal cycle that many professionals on two- or three-year residence visas find burdensome — a particularly significant advantage for those who have built careers, businesses, and families in the UAE over many years.
Other practical benefits include the ability to remain outside the UAE for more than six months without the visa becoming invalid — a provision that is highly valued by entrepreneurs and investors who spend significant time in other markets — and the ability to continue operating a business or remaining employed in the UAE independently of a specific employer’s visa sponsorship.
Job Seeker Visa: Another Option for Skilled Professionals
For skilled professionals who do not yet have an employment offer in the UAE, the Job Seeker Visa offers a six-month authorised stay without the need for employer sponsorship. The visa allows qualified candidates in fields such as technology, finance, healthcare, engineering, and education to enter the country, network, and secure employment legally — removing the pressure of having to secure a job offer from outside the country before arriving.
The combination of the Job Seeker Visa for new entrants and the expanded Golden Visa for those already established in the UAE creates a more complete and competitive international talent attraction system, reflecting the country’s awareness that it competes globally for skilled human capital against destinations including the UK, Singapore, Canada, and Australia.
AI Health Screening Mandatory From July 1
Separately, from July 1, 2026, the Dubai Health Authority will make AI-assisted health screening a mandatory component of the standard medical fitness process for residency applications. Tests must be completed at a DHA-approved centre equipped with the required AI-assisted diagnostic technology. The change modernises the medical fitness examination process and is expected to improve screening accuracy while reducing processing time for applicants. Those planning residency applications in the coming weeks should confirm the DHA-approved testing centre network and schedule their medical appointments before the July 1 implementation date to ensure compliance with the new requirement.
