Abu Dhabi Vehicle Impounding: Fees for Each Step

Date:

As of 1 October 2026: Abu Dhabi Police runs an unusual alternative to physically towing a seized vehicle away, Smart Vehicle Impounding, which fits an electronic device to the car and leaves it at a location the owner specifies rather than hauling it to a police yard, for AED 15 a day, read directly from TAMM’s own service page. Getting a vehicle back out of the standard impound process, by contrast, involves its own certificate and its own separate overage fee.

What is Smart Vehicle Impounding, exactly?

Rather than seizing a vehicle physically, Abu Dhabi Police installs a smart electronic device on it that prevents the car from moving from a location the owner specifies, with the device sending alert signals to a control room if someone tries to move it anyway. It costs a reservation fee of AED 15 for each day of impoundment, needs only an Emirates ID and proof of identification, and TAMM lists it as a 6-minute service to set up.

How do I actually get a vehicle back once it is released?

Collecting a vehicle at the end of its impound period runs through a separate service, Issue a Certificate for Releasing Impounded Vehicles. This one needs more documentation, a driving licence, Emirates ID, passport, and the vehicle registration, and carries a flat AED 100 issuance fee rather than the daily charge the smart impounding option uses. TAMM lists this as a 6-minute process once the documents and fee are submitted.

What happens if a vehicle sits past its impound period?

This is the detail most likely to catch an owner off guard: leaving a vehicle uncollected past the end of its impoundment period triggers a separate Pay Ground Fees for the Period Exceeding the Impoundment charge, AED 50 for light vehicles and AED 100 for heavy vehicles, on top of whatever release certificate fee already applies. The documents needed are an Emirates ID, proof of identification, and the vehicle registration, and TAMM lists this too as a 6-minute service once submitted.

Why three separate services for one impounded vehicle?

Each addresses a distinct moment in the process: Smart Vehicle Impounding is the alternative to towing in the first place, the release certificate is what actually lets an owner collect the car once the impound period ends, and the ground fee is the penalty specifically for not collecting it promptly. An owner who moves quickly after an impound period ends may only ever need the release certificate; one who leaves a vehicle sitting runs into the ground fee on top.

How does this connect to Abu Dhabi’s traffic points system?

Our Abu Dhabi traffic points guide covers the separate system governing a driver’s licence once points accumulate from fines, including the mandatory handover at 24 points and the AED 100 clearance certificate proving no outstanding fines. Vehicle impounding and licence points run as parallel systems under Abu Dhabi Police rather than triggering each other automatically, a driver can have a clean points record and still have a vehicle impounded, or vice versa. Our UAE traffic fines and Salik guide covers the underlying fines that often lead to an impounding in the first place, and how to check and clear them before the situation escalates.

Does impounding affect a vehicle’s registration status?

An impounded vehicle’s registration itself does not lapse simply because the car is sitting with Abu Dhabi Police or under a Smart Vehicle Impounding device, but any registration renewal that falls due while the car is unavailable still has to be handled on its own schedule. Our Abu Dhabi vehicle registration guide covers that separate renewal and transfer process, worth checking alongside an impound release if a renewal date happens to fall during the same period.

What is the short version?

Abu Dhabi vehicle impounding runs through three linked Abu Dhabi Police services: Smart Vehicle Impounding (AED 15 a day, device-based, stays at the owner’s chosen location instead of being towed), Issue a Certificate for Releasing Impounded Vehicles (a flat AED 100 once the impound period ends), and Pay Ground Fees for the Period Exceeding the Impoundment (AED 50 light or AED 100 heavy, charged specifically for leaving a vehicle uncollected). All three run through TAMM in about 6 minutes each.
