Abu Dhabi Vehicle Registration: Renewal and Transfer Fees Explained

Date:

Renewing a vehicle registration in Abu Dhabi costs AED 350 for a private or public light vehicle, or AED 400 for a private freight vehicle up to 3 tons, per Abu Dhabi Police’s own published fee schedule on TAMM, the emirate’s government services platform. The process takes about 6 minutes once you have your documents ready, and it can be done entirely online through UAE PASS.

What does Abu Dhabi vehicle registration renewal cost?

Abu Dhabi Police, the authority responsible for this service, publishes the following fees on TAMM:

  • Private light vehicle: AED 350
  • Public light vehicle: AED 350
  • Private freight (up to 3 tons): AED 400

These figures come directly from the TAMM service page for “Renew Vehicle Registration Card”, read on 30 September 2026. TAMM does not publish a separate figure for freight vehicles over 3 tons on this specific service, so if you operate a heavier commercial vehicle, confirm the exact fee at a service centre before you go.

What documents do you need?

The only document TAMM lists as required is your original Emirates ID. In practice, you should also bring your existing vehicle registration card (Mulkiya) and proof of valid motor insurance, since Abu Dhabi Police will not renew a registration without active insurance on file, even though TAMM’s own document list for this specific service only names the Emirates ID.

How do you renew it?

TAMM lists three steps for this service:

  1. Log in using UAE PASS, or visit a service centre in person
  2. Submit the application along with the required documents
  3. Pay the fee

The listed processing time is 6 minutes, though TAMM notes this can vary “as incurred”, meaning delays are possible if your file needs a manual check (an outstanding fine, an insurance mismatch, or an expired inspection certificate, for example).

If that inspection certificate has expired, getting it renewed is its own separate cost. ADNOC Distribution, which operates the authorised vehicle inspection centres, lists a fresh test at AED 150 and the comprehensive test required for registration renewal at AED 350. A failed test gets a first retest at AED 50 and a free second retest, so there is room to fix a fault and come back without paying full price twice.

What if you’re transferring ownership instead?

Transferring a vehicle’s registration file within the UAE is a separate service, and it is handled by a different authority: the Integrated Transport Centre, not Abu Dhabi Police. The published fees, also read from TAMM on 30 September 2026, are:

  • Light vehicle: AED 100
  • Vehicle weighing over 3 tons and up to 12 tons: AED 100
  • Vehicle weighing 12 tons or more: AED 200

This service also requires the original Emirates ID and takes up to 1 hour, longer than the straightforward renewal, since a transfer requires cross-checking two parties’ details rather than one.

Why does the authority change between services?

This is easy to miss and worth knowing before you start: Abu Dhabi splits vehicle-related administration across more than one body. Abu Dhabi Police issues and renews the registration card itself, while the Integrated Transport Centre handles ownership transfer certificates. Both services sit on the same TAMM platform with the same login, so the split is invisible unless something goes wrong and you are told to contact “the other department”.

If you are new to Abu Dhabi’s driving system altogether, the driving licence conversion and testing guide covers the separate process of getting licensed to drive, which is not the same as registering a vehicle you already own.

Does this cover Darb toll registration too?

No. Darb, Abu Dhabi’s toll gate system, is a separate registration with its own fee, and it does not happen automatically when you register or renew a vehicle. See the Abu Dhabi Darb toll guide for rates and peak-time charges, and the UAE traffic fines and Salik guide if you are also driving in Dubai, which runs a different toll system entirely.

Your Emirates ID is the single document every one of these services asks for first. If yours is due for renewal, the Emirates ID guide covers that process separately.

What is the short version?

Renewing an Abu Dhabi vehicle registration costs AED 350 for private and public light vehicles, AED 400 for private freight up to 3 tons, takes about 6 minutes, and needs only your Emirates ID, done through Abu Dhabi Police via TAMM. Transferring a vehicle’s ownership file is a different service, run by the Integrated Transport Centre, costing AED 100 for light vehicles and vehicles up to 12 tons, or AED 200 above that, and takes up to an hour. Both are separate from Darb toll registration, which has its own fee and does not happen automatically.
