The Rise of Saudi Arabian Football: Al-Hilal, the Saudi Pro League and Global Ambition

Date:

Saudi Arabian football has undergone a transformation of extraordinary speed and ambition, propelled by Public Investment Fund backing and a strategic decision to position the Kingdom as a global football power. The Saudi Pro League’s recruitment of the world’s biggest football names — most notably Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Al Nassr in 2023 — signalled to the global football community that Saudi football was prepared to compete at the highest commercial and sporting level.

Al-Hilal: The Most Successful Club in Asia

Al-Hilal FC, based in Riyadh, is the most decorated club in Asian football history and the most successful club in the Saudi Pro League. With a passionate fanbase exceeding tens of millions across the Arab world and regular AFC Champions League appearances, Al-Hilal has long been the region’s most recognisable club. Under the current investment wave, Al-Hilal has recruited international players of exceptional quality, competing for AFC titles and testing itself in FIFA Club World Cup competitions against European and South American giants.

The PIF Investment Strategy

The Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia’s involvement in professional football is not limited to international acquisitions like Newcastle United. PIF has invested directly in Al-Hilal, Al-Nassr, Al-Ahli, and Al-Ittihad — the four Riyadh and Jeddah clubs that form the core of the Saudi Pro League’s international appeal. This four-club consortium strategy allows PIF to build a competitive league rather than a single dominant club, creating a more sustainable ecosystem for the league’s development.

Saudi Arabia’s World Cup Ambition

Saudi Arabia has confirmed its bid to host a future FIFA World Cup, most likely in 2034. The country’s existing stadium infrastructure, combined with planned new venues, provides the foundation for a hosting bid that Saudi authorities believe can rival or surpass any previous tournament. Saudi Arabia’s successful hosting of the 2022 F1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in Jeddah, the Diriyah Season cultural events, and multiple other major international sporting events demonstrates the country’s growing event management capability.

For businesses in sports marketing, broadcasting, hospitality, and infrastructure, Saudi Arabia’s football ambitions represent one of the largest single commercial opportunities in the global sports industry. The country is willing to pay market-leading fees for quality partnerships that align with its vision of becoming a global sports and entertainment destination.
