As of 1 October 2026: the UAE’s Green Residence gives skilled professionals, freelancers and investors a five-year, sponsor-free visa, with three genuinely distinct qualification tracks. ICP’s own Green Residence Guide spells out income thresholds that most informal explanations skip, particularly the AED 360,000-a-year bar for freelancers.
What does Green Residence actually give you?
The UAE introduced this category as part of a broader push to attract skilled, self-employed and investing talent without tying their residency to a single employer sponsor, which is the structural weakness most standard employment visas carry.
It is a five-year residence, renewable, with no sponsor required inside the UAE. Holders can sponsor their spouse and children under the approved requirements, and ICP states the programme includes specified grace periods on expiry for added flexibility compared to employment-tied residency, which typically ends abruptly if a job ends.
Who actually qualifies? Three tracks, three different bars.
ICP groups eligibility into three categories:
- Skilled workers: a valid UAE employment contract, a professional classification of level 1 to 3 under MOHRE’s occupational system, at least a bachelor’s degree, and a minimum monthly salary of AED 15,000
- Freelancers and self-employed individuals: a freelance or self-employment permit issued by MOHRE, at least a bachelor’s degree or specialised diploma, and freelance income over the previous two years averaging no less than AED 360,000 a year, or proof of financial solvency through the residence period
- Investors and business partners: proof of investment or contribution to a UAE business venture, plus the necessary licences and approvals from the relevant authorities
How much does the investor track actually cost?
For the investor category specifically, ICP’s terms require a minimum contribution of AED 1,000,000 in cash or its equivalent, whether setting up a new company or buying into an existing one. If the contribution is in-kind rather than cash, the Ministry of Economy values it to confirm it clears that same AED 1 million bar. On top of the capital itself, ICP’s processing fees run:
- Application fee: AED 100
- Issuance fee, per year of the 5-year term: AED 100
- Smart Service fee: AED 100
That totals AED 700 in ICP fees across the full five years, separate from the AED 1 million investment itself. Investors also need to keep meeting the original conditions throughout the residence period and must notify ICP if that stops being true.
What documents does the investor track need?
Beyond a passport valid for more than six months and a personal photo, ICP asks for the trade licence and the partnership or investment agreement backing the application. This is lighter than the full company-formation paperwork a standalone business licence requires, since Green Residence is layered on top of an investment that has already cleared its own regulatory approval.
How does the freelancer track compare to a standard freelance permit?
Green Residence’s freelancer track sits above the standard UAE freelance and remote work visa in both income bar and what it buys. A basic freelance permit gets someone working legally; Green Residence’s AED 360,000-a-year threshold and bachelor’s-level qualification requirement buy a full five-year, sponsor-free, family-sponsoring residence instead of a shorter-term work authorisation.
How does this compare to the Golden Visa?
Green Residence sits a tier below the UAE Golden Visa in both duration and investment scale, five years against ten, and AED 1 million against the Golden Visa’s own higher investor thresholds in most categories. For someone who qualifies for both, the Golden Visa’s longer validity generally makes it the stronger long-term choice, but Green Residence is the more accessible route for a freelancer or skilled professional who does not clear the Golden Visa’s bar.
Anyone planning around either route should also read our UAE cost of living breakdown, since a five-year residency commitment is worth budgeting for properly rather than assuming the visa cost is the only real expense involved.
What is the short version?
UAE Green Residence is a five-year, sponsor-free visa split across three tracks: skilled workers earning AED 15,000 a month with a level 1-3 MOHRE classification, freelancers earning AED 360,000 a year with a bachelor’s degree, and investors contributing at least AED 1 million. The investor track costs AED 700 in ICP fees across the full five years, on top of the capital itself.
