Bahrain Vehicle Registration Renewal: Fees by Weight, Explained

Date:

Renewing a private vehicle’s registration in Bahrain costs between BHD 10 and BHD 80, depending on the vehicle’s weight, according to the General Directorate of Traffic’s own fee schedule on Bahrain’s national eServices portal, read on 30 September 2026. The heaviest vehicles pay the most; a standard motorcycle pays the least. This guide covers Bahrain vehicle registration renewal specifically, not first-time registration of an imported or newly purchased car, which follows a separate process.

How much does Bahrain vehicle registration renewal cost?

The fee has two parts: a vehicle inspection charge, and the annual registration fee itself, which scales with the vehicle’s empty weight.

Inspection fee:

  • Internal inspection (at a Traffic centre): BHD 5
  • External inspection (via a private inspection centre): BHD 15

Annual registration fee, by empty weight:

  • Up to 2.5 tons: BHD 15
  • Over 2.5 tons, up to 5 tons: BHD 30
  • Over 5 tons, up to 7 tons: BHD 36
  • Over 7 tons, up to 11 tons: BHD 60
  • Over 11 tons: BHD 65
  • Motorcycle: BHD 10

So a typical private car, under 2.5 tons, using the cheaper internal inspection, pays BHD 20 in total (BHD 5 inspection plus BHD 15 registration). A heavy truck over 11 tons, inspected externally, pays BHD 80 (BHD 15 plus BHD 65), which is the top of the published range.

What happens if you renew late?

Bahrain charges a late fee of 500 fils (BHD 0.5) per day, counted from the day after your registration certificate expires. This is capped at BHD 20 per year, so the penalty cannot run away from you indefinitely, but it does add up fast in the first weeks: 40 days late already reaches the annual cap.

What do you need before you renew?

Two conditions apply, and there are no documents to prepare in advance:

  • The vehicle must pass a technical inspection, if one is required for your vehicle type. You can find inspection centres through the Traffic app’s “Service and Vehicle Inspection Centers Inquiry” feature.
  • Civil liability insurance must be valid and cover the full period the renewed registration will run for.

The portal explicitly states no documents are required for this eService, since your vehicle and insurance details are already linked to your registration file electronically.

Does this cover new vehicle purchases too?

No. This fee schedule is for renewal of an existing registration, which is the annual task most vehicle owners in Bahrain actually deal with. Registering a newly purchased or imported vehicle for the first time goes through the dealer or a separate first-registration process at the Traffic Directorate, and it is not covered by this eService or its published fees.

Who handles this, and how long does it take?

The Ministry of Interior’s General Directorate of Traffic runs the service, and processing is listed as immediate once your inspection and insurance are in order. You can complete the whole renewal online through Bahrain’s national eServices portal without a service-centre visit, as long as your vehicle has already passed inspection.

How does this relate to your driving licence?

Vehicle registration and your driving licence are two separate files with separate renewal cycles. If your Bahrain driving licence also needs attention, the Bahrain driving licence guide covers conversion, testing and fees for expats, which is a different process with its own cost and timeline.

Your CPR (the Bahrain equivalent of a national ID for residents) is required across most Traffic and Interior Ministry services. If yours needs renewing too, see the Bahrain CPR guide. For drivers who split time across the Gulf, Oman’s driving licence rules and Kuwait’s driving licence process both run on different fee structures entirely, so do not assume Bahrain’s numbers transfer.

What is the short version?

Bahrain vehicle registration renewal costs BHD 10 to 80 total, made up of an inspection fee (BHD 5 internal, BHD 15 external) plus an annual registration fee that rises with vehicle weight, from BHD 10 for a motorcycle to BHD 65 for anything over 11 tons. Late renewals cost 500 fils a day, capped at BHD 20 a year. The General Directorate of Traffic processes it immediately online, and no documents are needed beyond a valid technical inspection and active civil liability insurance.
