Oman Vehicle Registration Renewal: Fees by Weight and Engine Size

Date:

Renewing a vehicle’s registration in Oman costs between OMR 18 and OMR 193, depending on the vehicle’s weight and, for lighter vehicles, engine size, according to the Royal Oman Police’s own published fee table, read directly on 30 September 2026. A small car pays close to the bottom of that range; a truck over 5 tons pays close to the top.

How much does Oman vehicle registration renewal actually cost?

For vehicles under 3 tons, the fee depends on engine capacity:

  • Under 1500cc: OMR 18
  • 1500cc to under 3000cc: OMR 23
  • 3000cc to under 4500cc: OMR 33
  • Above 4500cc: OMR 53
  • Tractors under 3 tons: OMR 43

For heavier vehicles, weight alone sets the fee, regardless of engine size:

  • 3 tons up to 5 tons: OMR 133
  • 5 tons and above: OMR 193

On top of whichever figure applies, add OMR 5 if your vehicle undergoes a technical inspection as part of the renewal.

Does every vehicle need a technical inspection?

No. The Royal Oman Police lists four categories that may require one:

  • Private vehicles that are 10 years old or older
  • Commercial vehicles
  • Buses and trucks
  • Pickup trucks

If your vehicle does not fall into one of these categories, you may be able to renew without the extra OMR 5 inspection fee. A newer private car, for instance, typically does not need one.

What else does the Royal Oman Police require?

Three conditions apply before you can renew:

  • The owner must have no outstanding BOLOs (alerts), restrictions or traffic violations on file
  • The owner must be physically inside Oman at the time of renewal
  • The owner’s ID card or resident card must be valid

That second condition matters if you travel often: you cannot complete this renewal from outside the Sultanate, even online, which is a stricter condition than how some other Gulf states handle equivalent vehicle services for residents temporarily abroad. In practice, this means expats who leave Oman for an extended period need to plan their renewal date around their travel, not the other way round, since a vehicle sitting unregistered while its owner is overseas will simply accrue the monthly late fine described below until someone is back in the country to act on it.

What if you renew late?

Oman charges a monthly delay fine if you renew more than a month after your vehicle’s registration expired. The fine is calculated against the same fee classification your vehicle falls into, so a heavier vehicle’s monthly penalty is larger than a small car’s, in line with its base renewal fee.

How does this compare to your other Oman paperwork?

Vehicle registration is separate from your driving licence and your resident card, both of which run on their own renewal schedules and fee tables. If your Oman driving licence needs converting or renewing, see the Oman driving licence guide, also handled by the Royal Oman Police. Your resident card is a different document again, covered in the Oman resident card guide, and you will need a valid one to renew your vehicle under the conditions above.

How does Oman compare to its neighbours?

Every GCC state runs its own vehicle registration system with its own fee logic, and they rarely map onto each other cleanly. Oman’s weight-and-engine-size structure for lighter vehicles is more granular than Bahrain’s system, which splits mainly by weight alone, or Abu Dhabi’s flat per-category pricing, which does not scale by engine size at all. If you are relocating a vehicle between Gulf states rather than simply renewing one, do not assume the fee structure or the inspection rules carry over.

What is the short version?

Oman vehicle registration renewal costs OMR 18 to 53 for cars under 3 tons depending on engine size (OMR 43 for small tractors), OMR 133 for 3-5 ton vehicles, and OMR 193 for anything over 5 tons, plus OMR 5 if a technical inspection applies. Inspections are required mainly for private vehicles over 10 years old, commercial vehicles, buses, trucks and pickups. You must be inside Oman, hold a valid ID or resident card, and have no outstanding violations to renew, and late renewals carry a monthly fine based on your vehicle’s fee tier.
