UAE Student Visa: The 180-Day Rule

Date:

As of 1 October 2026: a UAE student visa gives international students 180 days to stay in the country after their study programme ends, a far longer grace period than most expats realise. The figure, along with the full fee structure, comes directly from ICP’s own service page, not a university admissions office’s informal summary.

How long does a UAE student visa actually last?

ICP ties the residence duration directly to the length of the study programme itself, so a one-year diploma and a four-year degree are issued on different timelines by default. The detail most students miss is what happens afterward: once the programme is complete, ICP allows the student to remain in the UAE for a further 180 days before the residency formally needs resolving, whether that means leaving, transitioning to a work visa, or pursuing further study.

What does the visa cost?

The published fee structure covers:

  • Application fee: AED 100
  • Issuance fee, per year of residence: AED 100
  • Smart Service fee: AED 100
  • Financial security deposit fee: AED 20
  • Status Adjustment, where applicable: AED 500

That puts the floor at AED 320 for a single year of student residency before any status adjustment applies.

What does the university or institute actually need to provide?

This structure shifts most of the administrative burden onto the institution rather than the applicant, which reflects how closely ICP ties student residency to the accrediting body’s own confirmation of enrolment rather than treating it as an independent application the student assembles alone.

The documentation requirement is built around institutional confirmation rather than the student proving anything financially. ICP asks for a certificate from the Ministry of Education or the relevant emirate’s educational authority confirming the programme’s approval, a certificate from the university, college or research institution confirming the applicant’s enrolment, and a separate acceptance letter specifying the exact academic or training programme and its duration. Valid health insurance covering the stay is also required before the permit is issued.

What is the 60-day rule for students specifically?

Once a student enters the UAE, the same 60-day window ICP applies across its other residence categories applies here too: the residence issuance process needs to be finalised within 60 days of entry, or overstay fines of AED 50 a day begin. This runs separately from the 180-day post-study grace period, which only starts once the programme itself has actually finished.

What happens if a student overstays?

The fine structure does not distinguish between a student who overstays by a few days through an administrative delay and one who simply lets the deadline pass, so it is worth tracking the exact expiry date rather than relying on a general sense of when the programme ends.

Past either the entry window or an expired permit, the standard AED 50-a-day fine applies, the same structure ICP uses for every other residence and visa category. Students planning to transition straight into work after graduating should start that process well inside the 180-day window rather than treating it as a hard deadline to use in full, since finalising a new residence category can itself take time.

What comes after the student visa ends?

Graduates weighing their next step have a few real options inside the 180-day window: convert to an employment-sponsored residence if a job offer comes through, apply for the UAE freelance and remote work visa if self-employment fits better, or in some cases qualify for the UAE Golden Visa, which has specific routes for outstanding students and graduates from accredited universities.

Anyone budgeting for the years ahead as a student, or planning what comes after graduation, should also read our UAE cost of living breakdown alongside the visa rules themselves.

What is the short version?

A UAE student visa costs AED 320 at minimum for a one-year period, runs for the length of the approved study programme, and gives graduates 180 days afterward before their residency status needs resolving. The university or institute supplies most of the required documentation, and the standard 60-day entry window and AED 50 daily overstay fine apply the same way they do across ICP’s other residence categories.
