Dubai Vehicle Registration: Full RTA Fee Table

Date:

As of 30 September 2026: renewing a vehicle’s registration in Dubai costs AED 350 for a standard private car, the same figure RTA’s own service page lists for light vehicles generally, whether private or public.

That number is read directly from RTA’s “Renew and Amend Vehicle Data Ownership” service page, last updated 27 August 2026, and it happens to match Abu Dhabi’s own light-vehicle fee exactly, even though the two emirates run entirely separate systems with no shared pricing committee.

How much does Dubai vehicle registration renewal cost?

RTA breaks the fee down by vehicle type and weight, and the spread between the cheapest and most expensive categories is wide:

  • Light vehicle (private or public): AED 350
  • Light vehicle, classic: AED 350
  • Private vehicle, 3 to 12 tonnes: AED 400
  • Public vehicle, 3 to 12 tonnes: AED 650
  • Private vehicle, over 12 tonnes: AED 800
  • Public vehicle, over 12 tonnes: AED 1,000
  • Private light mechanical equipment: AED 500
  • Public light mechanical equipment: AED 800
  • Private heavy mechanical equipment: AED 800
  • Public heavy mechanical equipment: AED 1,000
  • Trailer and semi-trailer: AED 120
  • Bus, 14 to 26 passengers: AED 300
  • Bus, over 26 passengers: AED 600
  • Motorcycle: AED 200

On top of whichever figure applies, RTA adds a flat AED 20 Knowledge and Innovation fee, a standard federal charge that appears across most UAE government transactions rather than something specific to vehicle registration. It shows up the same way on driving licence renewals and a long list of other Dubai government services, so drivers who have paid it before elsewhere will recognise the line item.

What if you want the certificate delivered?

RTA offers four delivery speeds for the renewed Vehicle Ownership Certificate, each with its own extra cost on top of the registration fee itself:

  • Standard delivery: AED 20
  • Same-day delivery: AED 35
  • Delivery within 2 hours: AED 50
  • International delivery: AED 50

If none of these apply, you can also collect the certificate at a self-service machine by entering your transaction details, receive it by SMS or email, or add it to Apple Wallet through the RTA Dubai app. For most renewals where nothing about the vehicle or owner details has changed, the digital options are the fastest route and carry no extra delivery charge at all.

What does the service actually require?

RTA lists no special eligibility requirements or documents for this specific renewal beyond what the system checks automatically: your vehicle’s insurance and technical inspection both have to be valid before the renewal can go through. You log in using your username and password, UAE PASS, or your Emirates ID, driving licence or plate number details, select the vehicle, and RTA verifies both before letting you pay.

Getting that technical inspection done costs AED 170 for a standard light vehicle, AED 150 for the inspection itself plus the standard AED 20 Knowledge and Innovation fee, and RTA issues a certificate valid for 30 days once it passes. Booking an appointment at one of RTA’s approved testing centres, including Tasjeel branches and several private operators across Dubai, is mandatory rather than optional. A failed inspection on a light vehicle costs AED 50 to retest, while heavier vehicles and buses cost AED 75 to retest, and an export technical inspection runs AED 100.

If your plate is lost or damaged rather than simply due for renewal, the process branches slightly: you select a delivery option for the new plates and certificate, hand over the old plates if they still exist, and confirm your address before paying. RTA treats this as a variant of the same core service rather than a separate application, which is why the same fee table applies whether you are renewing on schedule or replacing a damaged plate.

How fast is it?

RTA lists the service time as instant once payment goes through, assuming your insurance and inspection are already valid. If either has lapsed, expect the process to pause until you renew those separately first, since RTA’s own verification step checks them automatically before allowing the registration renewal to proceed. There is no manual review step in between; the system either clears you to pay immediately or tells you what needs fixing first.

How does this compare to the rest of the Gulf?

Dubai’s AED 350 for a standard light vehicle lines up almost exactly with Abu Dhabi’s own AED 350 fee for the same category, which is a genuinely close match for two authorities that set their fee schedules independently of each other. Bahrain’s system, which prices by weight tier starting at BHD 10, Oman’s, which starts at OMR 18 for smaller engines, and Kuwait’s flat KD 5 fee regardless of vehicle size all land at very different price points once converted to a common currency. That gap says more about how differently each Gulf state has structured its vehicle administration, some by weight and type, one by a single flat rate, than about the actual underlying cost of running a car.

What is the short version?

Dubai vehicle registration renewal costs AED 350 for a standard light vehicle, rising to AED 1,000 for the heaviest public vehicles and mechanical equipment, plus a flat AED 20 Knowledge and Innovation fee on every transaction. RTA verifies your insurance and technical inspection automatically before letting the renewal through, the process is instant once paid, and certificate delivery costs an extra AED 20 to 50 depending on how fast you need it delivered.
